The European champions proved too strong for their CONCACAF counterparts with their stars shining before the final against Corinthians.
CF MONTERREY (MEX) 1-3 CHELSEA FC (ENG) [Dec 13]
Chelsea took the game to Monterrey early on with Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, and Oscar all starting in midfield. After five minutes, David Luis put Hazard through on the left side. His curling shot went wide, but the European champions took the lead 12 minutes later. After a smart interchange with Oscar, Ashley Cole found Mata in the penalty area and the Spanish international beat Jonathan Orozco with a precise left-foot finish. Then, Monterrey pushed for an equaliser and Jesus Corona outpaced the Chelsea defence on the left. The lively 19-year-old’s cross found Aldo de Nigris in front of the goal, but his header went above the crossbar.

Within three minutes from the restart, Chelsea added two more goals. Fernando Torres scored with a deflected shot from Hazard’s pull-back before Mata tried to square the ball across goal from Torres’s cross to force an own goal by Darvin Chaves. Despite falling three goals behind, the CONCACAF champions never gave up and upped the pace in their search for a goal. Finally, in the first minute of extra time, de Nigris raced through on the right to beat Petr Cech, though it was too late.
